Why are we adding salt to raw chicken?

I blogged about the changing tide and attitudes towards salt and its addition to foods.  Now, after a visit to Costco, I was horrified to see that raw chicken is being sold with added salt.  When did this happen?  How did this happen?  Anyone?  Costco?
